"An Argentinean who intends to regard Marx as a teacher argues that the character Don Segundo Sombra by Güiraldes does not exist, for it is merely a farm owner's vision of the old gaucho in Buenos Aires province. This is more or less like accusing Homer of writing a fabrication because exhaustive registers done in the Calabrian and Sicilian mountains prove that not a single trace of a Ciclop has been found. With the same naturalist criteria, we should reject Modigliani for his obsession of painting women of non existent throats. But where are these 'non existent'? Definitely not in the spirit of the painter. The difference between Modigliani and a camera is that art is not a mere copy of external reality, but an act of creation, closer to a dream than to a mirror.
Güiraldes' model to create his character was along those lines. I think he was called Segundo Ramírez. Astute administrators of fame will exhibit him to foreign tourists. I avoided the sadness of meeting him, but even so, I can affirm he was a mystifier, because the true Don Segundo is the myth imagined y Güiraldes, who mysteriously revealed a secret of the condition of man in the Pampas. Imortal, like every myth. May the sociologists of literature and the folklore teachers not lose their time trying to invalidate him."
Amén.
